KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 — PAS deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa (picture) said the party’s Majlis Syura Ulama or the Religious Scholars Consultative Council will decide whether it is necessary to hold a special muktamar.
He was responding to the call made by PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat who wants fresh party polls to purge what he called “problematic leaders.”
“We have our own internal mechanism to handle this matter. Maybe a syura meeting will be convened soon to get the explanation from him,” Nasharudin told reporters in Parliament.
The party’s powerful syura council is led by Nik Aziz and most members of the central committee are also part of the council.
Nasharudin said that at this stage the proposal is merely the Kelantan mentri besar’s personal view.
“Policy matters cannot be decided by the president or deputy president, they have to be discussed in a meeting,” he added.
Meanwhile PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub said he will meet with Nik Aziz tomorrow.
“I just received the news yesterday, I believe that it is only fair if I meet him first to hear from him directly,” said Salahuddin.
In his statement yesterday, Nik Aziz also hinted that party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and other leaders seen to be inconsistent with PR should be removed.
He also said that a special muktamar would set the party’s future direction and help fence-sitters to decide whether to back the Islamist party in the next elections.
Nik Aziz’s statement suggests that the party has yet to solve its differences on whether to strengthen the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) or to work closer with Umno.
Note: Please ... no hanky panky ... not again. Bear in mind, you are appointed leader(s)to lead us. No more open statement. We are just lost one of the five states. Peoples are watching us.
